They came, they saw, they cruised! The Goodguys 2018 Gary Meadors Memorial Hot Rod Week kicked off Monday, August 20, leading to a week of fun jaunts in and around the San Francisco Bay Area in advance of this weekend’s 32nd West Coast Nationals presented by BASF. Each day, more than 70 cars staged at the DoubleTree by Hilton (host hotel for the weekend) before heading out to the day’s hot rod-centric destinations.
The stop hosts rolled out the red carpet for the Hot Rod Week crew and for that we’re extremely grateful. Our hobby has a fellowship like no other. It was so much fun seeing wide-eyed participants arrive in a big group of candy-colored, chrome-plated hot rods and classics, then get full access to private collections, museums and rod shops. It was way fun!
Participants came in from around the country and as far away as Australia for Hot Rod Week and the 32nd West Coast Nationals! And the best news of all? Nobody broke down or got a speeding ticket! A huge thank you to everyone who hosted the group and to all the participants for their great cars and great energy. It was one for the books!
For opening day, we climbed over the Altamont Pass into the Central Valley. First-day stops included the Rick Van Unen Collection in Ripon, Tom and Andrea Holmquist’s “Pick-A-Deuce” Ranch in Modesto, and Nickell’s Customs in Lodi for lunch.
Day two saw us boogie across the San Mateo Bridge to the San Francisco Peninsula. Stops included South City Rod & Custom in Hayward, the Hiller Aviation Museum in San Carlos and the Scott and Fred Hawley Collection in South San Francisco for some tasty tacos!
The midweek motoring found us driving up the 680 corridor and out into the flat lands of Fairfield. Stops included Darryl Hollenbeck’s Vintage Color Studio in Concord, a sweet stop at the Jelly Belly candy factory before arriving at Specialty Sales for fresh grilled hot dogs.
Thursday Poker Run!
The final day of festivities featured the Danville Dukes Poker Run to the Wente Winery, lunch at Livermore Ford, Arlen Ness Motorcycles in Dublin and the final stop of HRW 2018 – the Goodguys World Headquarters for an ice cream social.
With that, we’re ready for the “Crown Jewel” of all Goodguys events – the 32nd West Coast Nationals presented by BASF. Come hang out with us in P-Town!
