The 3rd North Carolina Nationals kicked off the East coast leg of the Goodguys 2017 event season filling the North Carolina State Fairgrounds just outside of Raleigh, NC. High humidity and temps in the 90’s didn’t scare off all the good guys and gals, as droves of classic, muscle cars, pickups and spectators showed up to enjoy all the hot rod goodness throughout the weekend.
The excitement was at an all-time high with Saturday’s Specialty Parking areas including the Builder’s Choice, Trick Truck, our new Tri-Five area and more. Take all that action and roll in the bustling midways, indoor exhibit building stuffed with cars and vendor booths, a stacked indoor swap meet and constant cruising and you have a basic picture of what the mechanical madness was like here.
Ed Sears 8BA Flathead ’41 Ford Pickup, a “Great 8” finalist in Detroit in February took home both a truck of the Year-Early Finalist and Builders Choice Award nod. Way to go Ed!
Eat your heart out Henry Ford, Ed Sears 1941 Ford Pickup is the “Gold Standard” when it comes to pickups. Every panel on this 8BA powered barn find has been massaged and fit to perfection. The hood has been pie cut and nosed, the bed is entirely built from aluminum, and the cab has been extended 8.” Nearly every panel on the 2017 Goodguys Truck of the Year Finalist Early and 2017 Ridler Great 8 winner has been sectioned, rolled, or massaged before applying, what the owner calls, “Brown Sugar” and boy does it look fabulous.
Larry Griffey’s 1954 Corvette is not only a 2017 Ridler Great 8 winner, it was just chosen as one of Goodguys 2017 Custom Rod of the Year Finalists. It’s the couple first “hot rod” too, which is shocking considering they have built and restored cars for clients for nearly 37 years.
Constructed as a tribute to GM and the Corvette Concept that traveled the Motorama circuit in 1954, their custom ’54 features a handful of parts from the 1956 model Corvette. The roof and windshield are from a ’56, and unless you recognize the subtle differences (we didn’t), you’ll glance right over them. To compliment the body mods and stay true to the “concept” style of the 50’s, Larry and Robbie chose to update the powertrain to modern standards with a tubular Jamison chassis and Edelbrock supercharged LS1. The interior follows the same theme with a collection of leather, and high-end upholstery making it one cool concept Corvette.
Sunday is all about K&N Filters All American Sunday where late model show cars from 1973 to present can strut their stuff in the show & shine and on the AutoCross course. On the track, Relle Howard drove his 2010 Corvette into the winner’s circle with a 43.451 fast lap.
Until then, check out our gallery of award winners from the 3rd North Carolina Nationals weekend!
